In our daily lives, there are often demands from work, home, relationships, and other requirements that may take priority. We oftentimes place our well-being on the back burner and are made to feel that any time we set aside for ourselves is selfish. Society will have you believe that you are to give all you have and are to others, even if that means you are left completely depleted. I urge you to change your view and prioritize yourself today! Just think about it…without proper self-care, how will you be of use to anything or anyone else? If your cup is empty how and what do you continue to pour into others?

As a first step to incorporating more self-care in your daily life, I implore you to tap into self and learn what makes you happy. What is it that you need or want? How do your mind, body, and spirit feel? Acknowledging what our body may be saying to us, is the first step. Is your physical body tired, run down, or sore? Do you feel as though you are constantly running on fumes? Maybe a little rest and relaxation is what is needed. Are you tired of listening to other people’s problems, yet no one is there to listen to you when you need to vent? Maybe a talk with an unbiased person will help. Are you always doing for others and need a little “me time”? Think about scheduling a vacation, make the proper arrangements, and put your phone on Do Not Disturb.

You must prioritize yourself as it is a fundamental aspect to wellness that is afforded to all. It doesn’t take a lot of money or energy to nourish and replenish oneself. Self-care may look like taking the time to register and join a gym and setting aside time to regularly exercise. Self-care may look like getting 8 hours of mindful sleep. Exercise and sleep are good for the mind, the body, and the spirit as well. Self-care may also be demonstrated by implementing practices such as meditation and journaling. These practices allow self-expression and provide a release of emotion that can naturally build up in our daily lives. As you prioritize self-care for yourself you will naturally demonstrate to those around you that you acknowledge your importance and that your overall wellbeing should be important to them as well. Self-care may also include setting boundaries and saying no whenever necessary. Prioritizing your needs should be done without shame or guilt. It is wise to remember that it is okay to ask for help when needed and delegate tasks when possible.

Self-care will not look the same for you as it does for me. Listening to your entire body will provide you with the necessary next steps. You may want to explore different self-care practices to find what resonates with you. This can be done by trial and error. Whether it be by reading a book, spending alone time with quiet reflection, or prioritizing tasks that generate happiness.

In closing, by prioritizing self-care practices in your life, you are not only showing others that you value yourself, you are honoring yourself and affirming that you are important and deserving of care.
