Life is full of transitions, and how we navigate them can shape our future. For Jennifer Labuz, this understanding became both a personal and professional passion that led her to the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA) and a new career in life coaching. In October 2023, she graduated from the Life Coaching Certificate program, and her journey is an inspiring testament to the power of personal growth and transformation.
The Journey Before SWIHA
Before embarking on her path at SWIHA, Jennifer spent two decades as a middle school teacher. Her dedication to inspiring young minds was palpable, however, the challenges of teaching during the pandemic led to burnout. Feeling disconnected from her career yet still passionate about uplifting and working with people, Jennifer began soul-searching. It was during heartfelt conversations with friends that the idea of becoming a life coach took root. "The idea was a quick spark for me," she recalls. Already familiar with the positive impact of life coaching, having experienced it during her own challenging times like a rough divorce and a cross-country move, Jennifer knew this was something she had to explore.
A chance meeting with a new friend, Kerry Burki, introduced her to SWIHA as an ideal place to pursue her dream. Jennifer reflects, “My classroom experience had always focused on growth mindset and building confidence in students. It naturally flowed into what I wanted to do with coaching—help others navigate transitions with a focus on their personal growth.”
A Defining Moment of Realization
Sometimes, the universe gives us undeniable signs that we are on the right path. For Jennifer, one of these moments came while working with her first client. They had been hesitant about a major life change: returning to school and pursuing a new career. Through their coaching sessions, Jennifer helped the client identify mental blocks and take meaningful action. Witnessing her client enroll in courses and begin this new chapter warmed Jennifer’s heart. “It helped me realize that my work truly makes a difference and empowers others,” she says.
Transforming from Teacher to Life Coach
Jennifer’s decision to leave teaching was bold yet filled with certainty. Unlike her earlier feelings of dread when heading to school, she now wakes up excited and eager to connect with her clients. Her work is deeply fulfilling, as she helps others discover their strengths and prioritize their dreams. Even when impostor syndrome tries to make an appearance, the joy she finds in her new career quickly overshadows any doubts.
Her creativity, long buried by the demands of teaching, has also blossomed. “I always considered myself a creative person yet barely touched my art supplies for years,” she explains. Now, she’s crafting again, both for herself and others, and even experimenting with opening an Etsy store. She lives by the simple yet powerful advice from a friend: “Make art to make art.”
Professionally and Personally Growing
Launching her coaching practice, Jenn Labuz Coaching, has been an exciting and fulfilling endeavor. Filing for her LLC was a momentous step, symbolizing her commitment to this new chapter. Her services include one-on-one coaching and group classes focused on self-care—a skill that Jennifer has come to view as essential for navigating life’s transitions. “My coaching sessions empower clients to create routines that truly support them,” she explains. The lessons she learned at SWIHA, especially the importance of trusting in the process, guide her work daily.
Beyond her professional life, Jennifer makes time for herself and her loved ones. A recent spiritual retreat in California rejuvenated her spirit, and she relishes camping adventures in Northern Arizona with her husband. Evenings are often spent catching up on reading or crafting, a practice that brings balance to her busy days.
Lessons of Trust and Community
SWIHA gave Jennifer more than just coaching skills—it instilled a sense of trust in herself, the universe, and the unfolding of her path. Overcoming initial doubts about starting school and changing careers, she found that everything she needed aligned perfectly. “I looked forward to coursework every week because it felt so aligned with my beliefs,” she shares.
Among the many impactful teachers at SWIHA, Elmas Vincent stands out for offering constructive feedback and constant encouragement. Jennifer’s advice to future SWIHA students? Trust in your gifts and don’t be afraid to ask for support. “The SWIHA community is so amazing and helpful,” she emphasizes.
Embracing a Life Aligned with Purpose
Reflecting on her journey, Jennifer is grateful for the way her teaching background and new coaching practice have harmonized. Her mission remains the same: to inspire and guide others. Yet, now she does it in a way that feels deeply resonant and meaningful. Whenever she feels a flicker of uncertainty, she draws strength from the knowledge she gained at SWIHA and the impact she has already made.
Jennifer Labuz’s story is a beautiful example of listening to your inner calling, embracing change, and trusting in your journey. Her work continues to touch lives, one empowered client at a time.
