“This Joy that I have, the world didn’t give it and the world can’t take it away.” - Shirley Caesar
Wellness doesn’t mean we’re happy and joyous every day. What it means is when the hard days come, when your emotions are all over the place, when your anger gets the best of you, you have the tools to get through it a little easier. Many of us struggle with mental well-being issues at one point or another. When you are diagnosed with mental illness, it’s imperative that you receive help from an expert in the field. There are things we can do daily to work on our mental well-being.

I am grateful for what I have learned through the SWIHA Health and Wellness Coaching program. Seven years ago, a talented tattoo artist created an image for me, “Be true to your being” intertwined with a butterfly. The butterfly is symbolic of transformation and the overall image illustrates living my life authentically. What I have learned throughout my coursework has helped to bring this visual imagery of living my life authentically to reality.

“I started the Holistic Health & Wellness Coaching program at SWIHA after being sick of the repetitive feeling that I was missing something. I was a doula pre-COVID and felt like there was so much more I could be offering clients and their families, yet didn't know how to do that. I saw SWIHA come up on my internet screen more times than I would like to admit. I was a complete people pleaser at the time, so I continued to say no. I finally said, ‘YES, it's now. This is what I need’ and it's been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences. I am so glad I said yes. I love the closeness I feel with my classmates as well as the instructors and I also love that this program has challenged me to really focus on what I am passionate about.”

According to research professor and author Brene Brown, "Joy comes to us in moments—ordinary moments. We risk missing out on joy when we get too busy chasing down the extraordinary." This statement highlights an important distinction between happiness and joy. Happiness is often associated with external factors, such as material possessions or life events. It's the feeling we get when we achieve a goal or experience something positive. Joy, on the other hand, is an internal state of being that is not dependent on external circumstances. Recently I’ve settled on a joy/happiness distinction mantra of “Happiness is a response to life, joy is an approach to life.”

“Before SWIHA I was lost wondering what route I should take in my career. I've always been into fitness and holistic health. As a personal trainer and aerobics instructor, I knew I wanted to build upon my knowledge to help others. I remember looking into SWIHA over 10 years ago. For years it was always a distant dream to be a student until it finally became a reality thanks to the universe. The Holistic Nutrition and Wellness Coaching diploma got my attention quickly as it seemed to cover some of the topics I was passionate about. At a young age dealing with chronic illness, I've learned the value of giving my body nourishing whole foods and taking care of every aspect of well-being to live one's best life. I now want to share this knowledge and passion with the world to help other people with their personal wellness journey.”

“I was led to SWIHA by my intuition and my growing need to help others live a healthier and happier life. I knew that our health and wellness needed to be more important than any of the other things we put first in our busy lives. To be honest, I did not have a clue where this would take me or what a “Health and Wellness Coach” was. Yet, I still followed my intuition and drive to be able to grow my own knowledge of holistic wellness and ultimately help others to start putting their health and wellness first!”

“Don’t downgrade your dream just to fit your reality. Upgrade your conviction to match your destiny.” - Unknown
Sometimes, dreams can seem too big or scary to achieve. That the road and work will be long and hard, and sometimes even unachievable. Well, what if I told you the only thing standing in your way is you? Rebecca Merrill, Southwest Institute of Healing Arts Great Graduate of the Holistic Nutrition Wellness Practitioner Diploma program, didn’t let that stop her. Although the thoughts of not accomplishing her dreams and goals crossed her mind, she didn’t let that get in her way of living her true purpose of serving others in a meaningful way. Rebecca asserts, “Three years ago, I didn't think where I'm at now was possible. I'm proud of how far I've come and can't wait to see where this journey takes me next.”

The concept of energy is very prevalent in the wellness space for entrepreneurs. Your energy and vibes as a business owner have more of an effect on your business than you may realize. When we aren’t careful, or intentional, our energy can affect others and our business in a way we may not have intended. Oftentimes, when things go awry, we look to outside forces that may be causing our goals to not come to fruition. In reality, we should be looking within, and evaluating/reflecting our energy and world. If you don’t like what you see, change something about it! There are so many factors that come into play. When looking to shift your energy, reflect on these 5 traits below, as many successful entrepreneurs in the wellness industry attain these values.
