Unburdened Beauty: SWIHA Student Blog Series

Posted by Katrina Childrey-Harris on 2/9/23 4:00 PM

I enrolled in the Southwest Institute of Natural Aesthetics, desiring to learn more about natural skincare and the actual industry. I chose this path to fulfill the dream of opening a spa with my sister. After providing services in the healthcare industry for thirty-seven years as a nurse and in various healthcare management roles, the time had come for a career change. I reached a point in my life where I needed to shift focus to preventive care and health maintenance rather than sickness, disease, and death.

The Importance of Supporting Local Farms

Posted by Alexa Young on 2/7/23 4:00 PM

Farmers' Markets, Community Supported Agriculture, and purchasing from local farms have become an upward trend in the last few years, and rightfully so. As a Holistic Nutritionist and Wellness Coach, if I could recommend ONE diet change before anything else, it would be to eat locally. Not only is it better for your health to eat local, organic, and pesticide-free foods, it is also better for the environment. You have a larger variety of seasonal foods to choose from, it aids your local economy and puts money back into small businesses and farms, it strengthens community connections, and of course, the food is just fresher and tastes better!

Jenny McGee uses Holistic Nutrition Coaching to Heal the Mind, Body & Spirit

Posted by Jade Marvin on 11/10/22 4:00 PM

I knew I wanted to be a part of the Holistic Wellness industry 12 years ago when I started a new job working at Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center in Tempe, Arizona. This was my first introduction to what holistic medicine was and what it meant to view the body as a "whole" rather than just the symptom. I quickly grew passionate and learned that whole food nutrition is a necessary part to bring the body into balance. In 2009, I became a massage therapist and practiced for 5 years. I was passionate about massage therapy and eager to learn more. Little did I know, I was led to dive deep into my passion for helping my clients.”

Posted by Jade Marvin on 9/29/22 4:00 PM

The reason you are not getting what you want is because you are focusing on what they got. Don’t get distracted by their results, focus on your process.” - Unknown

In a world of constant scrolling, scrolling, scrolling - it can be easy to come across an image or a piece of news that can throw you down the ‘comparison spiral’. This old, unwelcoming yet pervasive pattern of comparing yourself to others does not serve you. Living in a world plagued with comparison, as we are flooded with more information than we can handle; whether it’s social media or the news, our minds, often subconsciously, are running a mile a minute trying to process and analyze all the information we are viewing. Although social comparison is a part of our normal behavior strategy as humans, we don’t have to let it consume us to a level that affects our mental health. From Chef to Health & Wellness Coach, Valerie Hahn Guides Others through Inner Transformations

Posted by Jade Marvin on 9/8/22 4:00 PM

What was your life like before SWIHA? What led you to SWIHA and to your particular program of study? Why are you passionate about this modality?

Before SWIHA, I was a Chef who worked long hours at a fine dining farm-to-table restaurant & was a hairstylist on the side. I love to cook and especially loved embracing the sustainability aspect of sourcing our ingredients and how everything connected full circle. Although I loved cooking, as many people know kitchens can be quite a challenging and sometimes toxic environment to be submerged in. At that point in my life, I was deeply depressed and longed to do something that felt more fulfilling to my soul. For me, this "cycle of depression" triggered an awakening of sorts. I began venturing my journey of "internal" personal development (outside my physical fitness) and sought out schools that spoke to my soul path. After studying myself and creating a boatload of interests, everything on my list pointed to holistic health and wellness. I discovered SWIHA at the beginning of my journey and finally answered the call to enroll 10 years later!

Holistic living means that your spiritual, relational, emotional, intellectual, physical, and financial lives are working together.”   - Tsh Oxenreider
