A spiritual awakening is the process of learning who we truly are through a vibratory connection that permeates us all. This awakening can feel different for each individual and come in stages as the person experiencing the shedding of their ego-self can slowly lose their identity of who they believe themselves to be and reconnect to the whole that is. When we do this, we have the unique ability to understand ourselves as well as others and raise what some believe to be the collective consciousness. A spiritual awakening is a personal experience that allows full connection with Prana, God, Source, Gaia, Yahweh, Allah, as well as many other names that have developed from the human language to describe what is utterly indescribable. What about the opposite side of that universal coin and the loss of that oneness that we crave? A spiritual death is something entirely different as it consumes and eats away at the wholeness we once had as a young innocent child. Spiritual death can occur when the spirit has undergone traumatic experiences, abuse, addiction, loss, or anything that slowly depletes our soul.

“Whenever you find yourself doubting how far you can go, just remember how far you have come. Remember everything you have faced, all the battles you have won, and all the fears you have overcome.” - N.R. Walker
When Michelle Runnion, Great Graduate of the Integrative Healing Arts Practitioner Program, decided to overcome her fears and tribulations, her healing journey truly began and the spark of passion for healing others ignited. Michelle asserts, “I have struggled with anxiety and agoraphobia for the majority of my life. When I decided that I wanted to heal myself so that I have a better life and heal others is when I felt reborn. I have pushed myself to do things that once were too scary to do. In the process, I realized that I am a Light Warrior. The two choices were to get sucked in by the darkness or to live through love and light. Here I am, shining bright and ready to share my love for my passions with others.”

“We all have secrets we keep locked away from the rest of the world. Friendships we pretend. Relationships we hide. Worst of all is the love we never let show; the most dangerous secret a person can bury are those we keep from ourselves.” - Kevin McCarty
Candice Lee, a graduate from the Integrative Healing Arts Practitioner program, at the age of 25, finally began to listen to the parts of herself she could no longer ignore. The parts of herself she had kept locked away, she finally dealt with. Her journey at SWIHA gave her the keys so that she could unlock those doors and finally make a change in her own life and the lives of others.

Like many who are led to Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, Kay Rose Miller was focused on fulfilling her purpose in life and determined to find a career she felt passionately about. “I was led to SWIHA after I meditated and used my pendulum to clear my mind of whether or not I wanted to enroll in classes at a local university for my Bachelor in psychology,” she tells us, “I found that was not what I wanted to do anymore.”
Kay Rose realized she was feeling a tug to do something holistic & to be of service to others and enrolled in the online Integrative Healing Arts Practitioner diploma program. Despite not being on campus, Kay Rose found a sense of community with her classmates by connecting virtually.

Pamela Borowoski once had a long struggle with both her self-worth and spirituality. She tells us: “In my younger days when I followed a different religious path, I attended Bible College and went on to become a local and overseas missionary and I thought that, since I was no longer in that faith, that I'd never find a spiritual calling like I had before.“
As she began the slow process of healing from her traumas and heartaches, she focused her energy on her family. Yet, she still found herself barely getting by.
“I was disabled,” Pamela shares, “I was so anxious and depressed I could not drive. I barely left the house. I was in pain physically, emotionally and spiritually.”

Sabrina Willie describes her life before Southwest Institute of Healing Arts as a rollercoaster: “I was tired of the ups and downs,” she says, “I knew I had to do something.”
That gut instinct led her to leave her job of ten years and begin to define her own path. Two weeks after her new journey began, Sabrina found out she was expecting a child! It cemented her calling to create a life she loved: “I knew it wasn't coincidental. I decided this was a great chance to change and be a better role model,” she tells us.

“I guess you could say I've lived many lives before I found SWIHA,” says Serena Gosling, an Integrative Healing Arts Practitioner student who’s graduating this month, “Spirituality always interested me, but I only scratched the surface.”
Serena explains that she spent much of her teens and early twenties using drugs as an escape. “I was still really lost, until about two and a half years ago,” she tells us, “I had a massive awakening and realized I wanted to help others heal. A few months later I found Southwest Institute of Healing Arts.”

“Since childhood, I have been quite intuitive,” says Andrea Aizlewood, a SWIHA Online graduate. Andrea always knew that she had unique spiritual skills waiting to be discovered and refined; she could receive emotions from those those around her, recognize synchronicities, and even sense energies. Her gifts were so strong, however, that they initially intimidated her.
“I closed up out of fear,” she explains, “I closed up for almost a decade, all through my early twenties.”
It was only when her one-year-old showed signs of the same intuition Andrea possessed, that a new-found interest in exploring her abilities was sparked: “I saw my son wave at my long-deceased grandmother [who I felt] standing in the corner of the room. It made me realize that I had to get over my fears so that I could be there for my son to teach him how to protect himself and learn his own gifts.”

Many people discover the healing arts after being sparked by something deeply personal; Valeria Neiman, a graduate of SWIHA’s Integrative Healing Arts Practitioner program, is a shining example of igniting this passion and turning it into her profession.
Seeking Answers
Sixteen years ago, Valeria found herself in the role of caretaker for her then-partner. He suffered from several different ailments and traditional medicine wasn’t producing many answers. After watching him undergo countless failed treatments, Valeria realized there was something vital that Western Medicine had been ignoring: the mind-body-spirit connection. This revelation motivated her to investigate alternative healing methods.
