A Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912) named Nan-in welcomed a university professor who came to learn about Zen. The Japanese master began to serve tea. Nan-in poured the professor’s cup full, and then some. As the professor watched the teacup flow, he eventually could no longer restrain himself and blurted out “It is overfull. No more will go in!” Nan-in then replied, “like this cup, you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?”

We've all been there. We want to eat healthier, so we do a quick Google search to get some tips and suddenly become overwhelmed by the amount of data returned. Results range from diets promising quick and easy results - low carb, low fat, high fat, carnivore, keto, plant-based - to food subscriptions to buy, ads for nutritional and fitness services, and a few websites promising to unlock the secrets to healthy eating but leave you with very little and often conflicting information. It's frustrating, often resulting in giving up and continuing old habits or taking advice from a friend of a friend who happens to know all about the latest diet craze; you hop on board excited about the promised results. Disappointment settles in quickly. Why isn't the diet working?

Liana Salas was guided to SWIHA’s Life Coaching program while on a soul-journey of her own.
She had struggled with her weight in her teens and early twenties, and told herself she’d be happy after she released the weight and unhealthy habits.
“On my own, through nutrition and exercise, I lost over 80 pounds,” she says, “and I still wasn’t happy. I realized I was looking to circumstances outside myself for my happiness. As long as I stayed on that path, I would never be content.“

Many of us have the goal of making wellness a priority in 2019...but why not start today?
The Holiday season is busy with travel, shopping and plenty of get-togethers. We're often giving so much of our energy, that we may not even notice when our reserves are low until we're exhausted, foggy-brained and sometimes even sick. By remembering self-care, you can be more present (no pun intended!) for your loved ones and let the Universe know that we're ready and open to receive the good that's in store for the new year.
We created a 12-day challenge based on some of the programs here at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts. If you decide to embark on this journey with us, let us know how it's going by using #SWIHAWellnessChallenge on social media! (Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see posts from our commUNITY!)

According to ancient Chinese legend, Emperor Shen Nung was resting against a Camellia sinensis tree while waiting for his drinking water to boil. Suddenly, the wind picked up and caused the leaves of the tree to fall in to the steaming pot!
Instead of throwing out the water, Shen Nung decided to try the concoction. He described a warm feeling from the brew, as if the liquid was travelling to each part of his body, making a journey around his insides. He named the beverage ch’a, the Chinese character meaning “to investigate”. We now call it tea.

Let’s face it: when it comes to eating well, a discussion of the “right” diet and “best” lifestyle is always on the table. Every day, we are bombarded with information (and misinformation!) about what to eat, how to eat, and when to eat. So, when we get confused, who do we turn to? The experts, of course!
Yet, what exactly does it mean to be an “expert” in the field of nutrition? Do you need two different degrees and a decade of schooling to be able to talk to others about eating healthier? When you’re facing down your next meal, who can you ask for solid advice?
Below we’ll look at the differences between the three most popular nutrition careers: a dietician, a nutritionist, and a holistic nutrition coach. Whether you’re looking for assistance from one of the above or looking to become one of the above, it’s important to know the educational requirements, job duties, and strengths of each!
